What this trial studies
This research focuses on a mindfulness meditation program aimed at improving sleep quality and reducing stress among African-American adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The study will adapt an established mindfulness curriculum specifically for this population and will include text messaging support. It will involve an 8-week pilot randomized controlled trial with up to 100 participants, assessing the impact of the intervention on cardiometabolic risk factors and inflammatory biomarkers. Primary outcomes will be measured at baseline, 8 weeks, and 16 weeks to evaluate changes in sleep quality and perceived stress.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are African-American adults aged 21-75 with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes living in the greater Chicagoland area.
Not a fit: Patients with untreated obstructive sleep apnea, severe insomnia, or those currently engaging in mindfulness practices may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly reduce cardiovascular disease risk among African-Americans with type 2 diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using mindfulness approaches to improve health outcomes, particularly in populations at risk for cardiovascular disease.
