What this trial studies

The DEPRECAP study is an ongoing observational program aimed at screening for lung cancer in individuals with COPD or emphysema. It recruits participants from pulmonary clinics in Madrid, Spain, and involves annual low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) and pulmonary function tests until participants reach age 75 or have 15 years of smoking abstinence. The study seeks to gather scientific evidence on the benefits of lung cancer screening in this high-risk population and aims to reduce mortality rates associated with late-stage lung cancer diagnosis. Additionally, it will create a registry of clinical, radiological, functional data, and biological samples for future research.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are current or former smokers aged 55-75 with a history of significant smoking exposure and a diagnosis of COPD or emphysema.

Not a fit: Patients with a recent history of cancer or other serious medical conditions that pose a significant risk of death may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly reduce lung cancer mortality rates in patients with COPD or emphysema through early detection.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with similar lung cancer screening approaches in high-risk populations, indicating potential for positive outcomes.
