Investigating long-term complications in patients with deep venous thrombosis
Deep Venous Thrombosis and Risk of Long Term Complications in Acutely Admitted Patients
This study is trying to see if certain blood markers can help predict long-term problems, like post-thrombotic syndrome, in people who have had their first episode of deep vein thrombosis, especially looking at those who have or haven't had COVID-19.

What this trial studies
This cohort study aims to analyze biomarkers related to inflammation, immunity, and aging in patients experiencing their first episode of lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT), with a focus on those who have or have not been infected with SARS-CoV-2. The study will follow participants for two years to assess the development of long-term complications, particularly post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). By comparing biomarker levels at diagnosis, the researchers hope to identify factors that contribute to the risk of developing PTS and other complications. The study will involve blood sampling and ultrasound examinations to gather necessary data.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who are hospitalized for their first episode of lower extremity DVT.
Not a fit: Patients who do not speak or understand Danish, terminal patients, or those without a Danish social security number may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of long-term complications in DVT patients, potentially enhancing patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While the investigation of biomarkers in DVT is a recognized area of research, this specific approach focusing on the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on long-term complications is relatively novel.
