Investigating brain tumors and their evolution
Tracing Brain Tumors Through Deep Time
This study looks at brain tumors in patients of all ages to see how their locations and structures relate to the evolution of the brain and skull, using imaging data from thousands of past cases.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to analyze the locations and structural aspects of brain tumors in patients of all ages, comparing this data with the evolutionary biology of the brain and skull in vertebrates. It will involve screening approximately 10,000 patients diagnosed with primary brain tumors from 2005 to 2023, utilizing imaging data from CT and MRI scans. The study will manually segment tumor areas and apply machine learning algorithms to automate the segmentation process for a larger dataset, ultimately generating density maps to visualize tumor locations quantitatively by patient age.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients of all ages diagnosed with primary brain tumors who have available imaging data.
Not a fit: Patients without pre-operative or pre-radiation imaging data or those with significant artifacts in their scans may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance our understanding of brain tumor evolution and potentially inform future treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of linking tumor data with evolutionary biology is novel, similar studies in tumor imaging and machine learning have shown promising results.
