Investigating bacteria in gallbladders of patients undergoing surgery
Cholecystitis From a Microbiological and Histopathological Perspective
This study is testing if bacteria in the gallbladder of patients having gallbladder surgery affects how well standard antibiotics work for treating infections.

What this trial studies
This project aims to explore the presence of bacteria in the gallbladder wall and bile of patients undergoing cholecystectomy. It compares two groups: those with acute calculous cholecystitis and those without, to assess the effectiveness of standard antibiotic treatments against common pathogens. Additionally, the study will examine the correlation between bacterial presence and inflammation severity, potentially predicting infection causes in cholecystitis cases. The findings could enhance the understanding of antibiotic choices for gallbladder infections.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years undergoing cholecystectomy at the Department of Surgery, Sygehus Lillebælt, Kolding.
Not a fit: Patients who have received antibiotics within a month prior to surgery or have had previous gallbladder-related interventions may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved antibiotic treatments for patients with gallbladder infections.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is not widely tested, similar studies investigating bacterial presence in surgical contexts have shown promising results.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age above 18 years * Signed consent form * Patients having cholecystectomy performed at the Department of Surgery, Sygehus Lillebælt, Kolding. Exclusion Criteria: * Administration of any type of antibiotics one month prior to surgery in the control group. * Previous instrumentation of the bileducts * Previous clinical acute cholecystitis treated conservatively with antibiotics Patients will be precluded from the studypopulation in cases of pPerioperative perforation of the gallbladder, or conversion to open cholecystectomy or in cases of failed attempts to extract bile or samples from the gallbladder wall.
