What this trial studies

This single-center, non-profit project will estimate how common a range of infections is among adult asylum seekers hosted in reception centers. Participants will attend one visit for medical history, vital signs, physical exam, and collection of blood, urine, and stool samples. Blood tests include complete blood count, liver and kidney markers, HIV, HBV, HCV, syphilis, Quantiferon for tuberculosis, and serologies for several parasitic infections; urine and stool will be examined for parasitological findings when indicated. Results will be used to identify undiagnosed infections and to inform local clinical and public health responses.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Asylum seekers aged 18 or older, residing in reception centers and present in Italy for at least 2 months but no more than 36 months, who consent to screening.

Not a fit: People under 18, those in Italy for less than 2 months or more than 36 months, and anyone who refuses consent are not eligible and will not receive the screening benefits.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the screening could identify undiagnosed infections so participants can receive timely treatment and reduce onward transmission.

How similar studies have performed: Similar targeted screening programs in migrant populations have previously identified elevated rates of tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, and parasitic infections and informed follow-up care.
