Identifying infection risks in children with cancer and fever.
Risk Factors & Outcomes for Clinically Documented Infections in Pediatric Cancer Patients With Fever & Neutropenia
Assiut University · NCT02536599

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to identify clinical and laboratory parameters that can predict which pediatric cancer patients experiencing fever and neutropenia are at risk for developing clinically documented infections and complications. By understanding these risk factors, healthcare providers can make informed decisions regarding treatment strategies, such as whether to manage patients as outpatients or inpatients. The study will include children under 19 years old who have been diagnosed with hematologic malignancies or solid tumors and have experienced episodes of fever and neutropenia. The findings could lead to improved management and outcomes for these vulnerable patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children under 19 years old diagnosed with hematologic malignancies or solid tumors who have experienced fever and neutropenia.
Not a fit: Patients over 18 years old or those who do not meet the criteria for fever and neutropenia may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the ability to predict infections in pediatric cancer patients, leading to better-targeted treatments and improved patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored infection risks in neutropenic patients, this specific approach focusing on pediatric cancer patients is relatively novel.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Patients whose age less than 19 years. * Patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancies or solid tumors. * Patients admitted at the pediatric oncology department for at least 24-hour period after documentation of an episode of fever \& neutropenia at the time of initial evaluation at the pediatric oncology clinic. * Patients who previously have been admitted at the pediatric oncology department, after documentation of an episode of fever \& neutropenia. Exclusion Criteria: * Patients whose age is more than 18 years. * Patients not fulfilling the criteria for diagnosis of fever and neutropenia.
