How weather and air pollution affect physical activity in Shenyang and Shenzhen

The Influence of Climate and Air Pollution on Physical Activity of Chinese People in Shenyang(41.481175ºN) and Shenzhen(22.324386ºN)

Observational Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology ,Chinese Academy of Sciences · NCT07523659

This project will test whether differences in weather and air pollution change how much physical activity adults aged 18 to 55 do in Shenyang and Shenzhen.

What this trial studies

Researchers will recruit 62 adults in each city and measure body composition and physical activity repeatedly over the study period. Participants will wear a GT3X accelerometer every two months and an iButton temperature sensor, with six measurement rounds in total, while researchers collect local weather station temperatures and publicly available PM2.5 data. The design compares activity patterns between temperate Shenyang and subtropical Shenzhen to identify how climate and pollution relate to daily activity. Personal sensor data will be linked with environmental measures to find conditions associated with decreased or increased physical activity.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are adults aged 18–55 who live in Shenyang or Shenzhen year‑round, are able to be physically active, and can attend regular measurement visits.

Not a fit: People outside the 18–55 age range, those with disabilities or medical conditions that limit physical activity, and those who are pregnant or lactating are unlikely to benefit from joining.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help people and public health officials choose safer times and places for exercise and create guidance to protect activity during extreme weather or high pollution.

How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies using accelerometers and air quality data have linked weather and pollution to changes in activity, so this approach builds on established methods rather than being entirely novel.
