What this trial studies

Adults with mild to severe depressive symptoms are randomized to a physical activity intervention or to standard care at a university site in São Paulo. The intervention targets reductions in sedentary behavior, with attention to mentally passive versus mentally active sitting, and increases in physical activity. Outcomes include changes in depressive symptom scores, physical performance measures, and cardiometabolic risk indicators. Key exclusions include recent cancer, muscle degenerative disease, or inability to perform required physical tests.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults older than 17 who have mild to severe depressive symptoms and who can complete physical assessments and attend visits in São Paulo.

Not a fit: People with cancer in the past five years, diagnosed muscle-degenerative diseases, or those unable to perform the physical tests may not benefit or be eligible.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could lower depressive symptoms and reduce cardiometabolic risk by replacing passive sitting with more active behaviors.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research shows physical activity can reduce depressive symptoms and emerging evidence suggests different types of sitting have different health effects, but results are mixed and targeted trials are limited.
