Heavy strength training for survivors of head and neck cancer
Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Heavy Lifting Strength Training Versus Usual Care in Head and Neck Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial

What this trial studies
This trial investigates the feasibility and effects of a heavy lifting strength training (HLST) program for survivors of head and neck cancer. It aims to compare the outcomes of HLST against usual care in improving muscular strength, physical function, and quality of life. Participants will undergo assessments including strength tests and evaluations of various health-related quality of life metrics. The study will recruit 60 participants who are at least one year post-treatment and meet specific eligibility criteria.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who are at least one year post-treatment for any subtype of head and neck cancer and have adequate shoulder range of motion.
Not a fit: Patients who have recently engaged in strength training or are currently participating in another exercise trial may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly enhance the physical functioning and quality of life for head and neck cancer survivors.
How similar studies have performed: While light-to-moderate strength training has shown benefits in similar populations, this study's focus on heavy lifting strength training is novel and has not been extensively tested in head and neck cancer survivors.
