What this trial studies
The intervention randomizes eligible community-dwelling older adults in Borgholm to receive structured health dialogues and compares outcomes to a matched control group drawn from seven other municipalities in Region Kalmar. Researchers will link registry data with repeated survey responses over six years to monitor quality of life, morbidity, healthcare use, and lifestyle factors. The study includes cost-effectiveness and reach analyses and a qualitative substudy of participant experiences and motivations. A separate substudy will develop and validate machine-learning models to predict functional decline and high healthcare needs against established risk tools.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are community-dwelling residents of Borgholm or matched areas in Kalmar County, aged 67–84, who speak Swedish and can attend primary care health dialogues.
Not a fit: People living in nursing homes or those who do not speak Swedish are excluded and are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help older adults maintain function and quality of life while reducing future healthcare use and costs.
How similar studies have performed: Evidence to date is mixed—systematic reviews have not shown clear mortality benefits, though some cohort studies report cardiovascular or preventive advantages, so prior results are limited and inconsistent.
