From exclusion to inclusion: understanding and reconnecting breast cancer patients who stopped follow-up

A Comprehensive Analysis of Follow-up Outcomes, Continuity and Updated Survivorship in Breast Cancer

Observational Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute · NCT06927102

This project will try outreach by phone, message, or email to see if women treated for non-metastatic breast cancer at a Hyderabad tertiary centre who stopped follow-up can be re-engaged.

What this trial studies

This is a prospective cohort analysis of women diagnosed with non-metastatic breast cancer in 2017–2018 who received treatment at a single tertiary cancer centre. Baseline demographic, tumor, stage, subtype, and treatment data will be collected from medical records. Phase I will document annual follow-up visits through December 2024 using hospital records and EMR to determine five-year loss-to-follow-up rates and associated factors. Phase II will identify patients categorized as lost-to-follow-up, extract additional socioeconomic and geographic variables, and undertake proactive outreach to obtain consent, current health status, and patient-reported barriers to follow-up.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Women diagnosed with non-metastatic breast cancer between 2017 and 2018 who were treated at Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and are currently classified as lost-to-follow-up and willing to re-engage.

Not a fit: Patients who have permanently relocated outside the study region, received ongoing care at another centre, have incomplete records, or cannot be contacted are unlikely to benefit from the outreach approach.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, proactive outreach could bring more patients back into follow-up care, enabling earlier detection of recurrence and improved long-term management.

How similar studies have performed: Similar proactive outreach programs have reduced loss-to-follow-up in other cancer and chronic disease settings, though robust local evidence from Indian tertiary centres is limited.
