What this trial studies
This program aims to provide families on Medi-Cal with children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) access to fresh fruits and vegetables through a prescription voucher system. Participants will be randomized into two groups: one receiving immediate access to nutrition incentive vouchers for 12 months and the other receiving vouchers after a 6-month delay. The program will evaluate the impact of increased fruit and vegetable consumption on metabolic outcomes, food security, and overall health through laboratory studies and surveys conducted at regular intervals. The initiative is a collaboration between Rady Children's Hospital, UCSD, and local markets to enhance dietary habits and reduce food insecurity.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children under 18 years old with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and elevated hemoglobin A1c levels.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have type 2 diabetes or those with family members already participating in the study may not benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve dietary habits and metabolic health in children with type 2 diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown positive outcomes with similar nutrition incentive programs, indicating potential for success.
