What this trial studies
This research investigates the relationship between daily and racial stressors, such as racism and discrimination, and the use of alcohol and cannabis among African American young adults. It aims to identify individual and community coping mechanisms that can mitigate these effects. By focusing on culturally responsive prevention and treatment strategies, the study seeks to address substance misuse in this population. Participants will engage in interventions related to direct and vicarious discrimination and daily hassles.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Black, African American, or Afro-Caribbean young adults who have used alcohol and/or cannabis at least four times in the past month and endorse using these substances to cope.
Not a fit: Patients currently in or seeking treatment for alcohol and/or cannabis use disorder may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to effective prevention and treatment strategies tailored for African American young adults struggling with substance misuse.
How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research into substance misuse among African American populations, this specific focus on resilience and coping mechanisms in the context of racial stressors is relatively novel.
