Examining bone health and muscle mass in dialysis patients

Association Between DXA Results and the Complications, Clinical Courses and Outcomes in Chronic Dialysis Patients

National Taiwan University Hospital · NCT02616627

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle mass with fractures and other adverse events in patients undergoing chronic dialysis. Using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the study will assess BMD and body composition, while also measuring blood levels of key factors such as FGF23, calcium, phosphate, PTH, and vitamin D. Participants will be followed for one year to evaluate their clinical outcomes and physical performance at multiple time points.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 20 years old who are currently receiving chronic hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.

Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management strategies for preventing fractures and other complications in chronic dialysis patients.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on BMD in chronic kidney disease, this specific approach focusing on the interactions of multiple biochemical factors in dialysis patients is relatively novel.
