What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the causes and management of pleural effusion in hospitalized patients. It will involve performing thoracentesis for pleural fluid analysis to better understand the incidence and aetiology of pleural effusion in Hong Kong. The study seeks to establish a local registry to inform physicians about the disease burden and improve management practices. By addressing gaps in current knowledge, the study aims to enhance diagnostic accuracy and reduce complications associated with pleural procedures.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are hospitalized patients aged 18 years and older who are diagnosed with pleural effusion.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to provide informed consent due to refusal or cognitive impairment will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved diagnosis and management of pleural effusion, potentially reducing hospital stays and healthcare costs.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been various studies on pleural effusion, this specific approach focusing on local epidemiology and management practices is novel and has not been extensively tested.
