Effects of relighting on smoke toxicant deliveries and smoking measures
Effects of Relighting on Smoke Toxicant Deliveries and Subjective Smoking Measures
NA · Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota · NCT06295757
This study is testing whether relighting cigarettes makes them more harmful for smokers by looking at the toxic substances they produce and how smokers feel about their smoking experience.

What this trial studies
This study investigates how relighting cigarettes affects the delivery of toxic substances and subjective smoking experiences among smokers. It involves a within-subject comparison of 30 smokers who regularly engage in relighting behaviors, assessing both relit and non-relit cigarettes in their natural environment. Participants will undergo in-clinic measurements of smoking patterns and subjective responses to evaluate the differences in smoke yields of harmful constituents. The hypothesis is that relit cigarettes will produce higher levels of toxicants compared to those smoked continuously without relighting.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are smokers who consume at least 10 cigarettes per day, have been smoking for over a year, and frequently engage in relighting behaviors.
Not a fit: Patients who are currently trying to quit smoking or have intentions to quit in the near future will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into the health risks associated with relighting cigarettes, potentially guiding smoking cessation strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically on relighting behaviors, studies on smoking topography and toxicant delivery have shown varying degrees of success in understanding smoking patterns.
