Digital imaging for diagnosing cavities, plaque, and gum disease

RESTODATA-NUM: A Multicenter Observational Study on the Assessment of Dental Pathologies Using Digital Tools in Adults

Observational Recherche Clinique en Odontologie (ReCOL) · NCT07205588

What this trial studies

This observational project collects routine clinical oral exams alongside digital images from panoramic radiography, intraoral scanners, and when indicated cone-beam CT to compare information each tool provides. Consent adult patients who are new to the practice or have not visited in the past six months will have their clinical findings and corresponding images recorded and archived. The design is non-interventional and excludes pregnant people, individuals under legal guardianship or curatorship, and patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Analyses will describe how each imaging modality complements the visual exam for diagnosing caries, plaque, and periodontal disease and document workflow implications.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults (18+) who can give informed consent, are affiliated with a social security scheme, and are new to or have not visited the participating dental practices in the past six months.

Not a fit: Patients under 18, pregnant people, individuals under legal guardianship or curatorship, and patients currently undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances are excluded and unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could help dentists detect dental problems earlier and plan treatment more accurately while making impressions more comfortable for patients.

How similar studies have performed: Intraoral scanners and CBCT are already used in routine dentistry and previous work has shown they can improve visualization and treatment planning, although diagnostic benefit varies by condition and modality.
