Dexmedetomidine plus desflurane anesthesia for elective laparoscopic colectomy
Efficacy and Safety of Dexmedetomidine Combined With Desflurane in Laparoscopic Colectomy: A Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Clinical Trial (DEXDES Trial)
NA · Tam Anh Research Institute · NCT07239479
This trial will test whether adding dexmedetomidine to desflurane anesthesia helps adults having elective laparoscopic colectomy use less desflurane, maintain steadier blood pressure and heart rate during surgery, and recover faster afterward.

What this trial studies
This is a randomized, double-blind controlled trial enrolling 40 adult patients undergoing elective laparoscopic colectomy at Tam Anh TP. Ho Chi Minh General Hospital. Participants are randomized to receive either dexmedetomidine with desflurane or desflurane with saline placebo during general anesthesia. The primary outcome is average desflurane consumption per hour, with secondary outcomes including intraoperative hemodynamic parameters, fentanyl consumption, quality of emergence, and incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting within an ERAS framework. Safety and anesthetic-sparing effects will be compared between groups.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18–65 with ASA physical status I–II scheduled for elective laparoscopic colectomy who can provide informed consent are the intended participants.
Not a fit: Patients with severe cardiac, hepatic, or renal disease, COPD or asthma, atrioventricular block or sick sinus syndrome, chronic opioid or psychotropic use, or significant intraoperative bleeding/hemodynamic instability are excluded and unlikely to benefit from this protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the combination could reduce desflurane use, lower opioid requirements, stabilize intraoperative hemodynamics, and speed postoperative recovery and discharge.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies combining dexmedetomidine with volatile anesthetics have shown anesthetic-sparing effects and improved emergence profiles, though specific data pairing dexmedetomidine with desflurane in laparoscopic colectomy are limited.
