What this trial studies

This prospective, cross-sectional study aims to establish updated reference values for the Muscle Power Sprint Test (MPST) in children aged 5-12 years. Participants will perform six short sprints of fifteen meters each, with a ten-second rest between efforts, to assess their anaerobic exercise capacity. The study seeks to address the limitations of previous exercise tolerance tests by providing a more relevant measure of children's physical capabilities in daily activities. The primary outcome will be the calculated 'mean power' from these sprints, which will help in understanding normal performance benchmarks for this age group.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children aged 5-12 years who are attending primary education or after-school childcare centers.

Not a fit: Patients with cardiac or respiratory morbidities, injuries limiting exercise capacity, or motor function impairments may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide updated reference values that enhance the assessment of physical fitness in children, particularly those with congenital abnormalities.

How similar studies have performed: While previous studies have established norm values for similar tests, this study aims to provide updated reference values that reflect current lifestyle changes, making it a novel approach.
