Comparing two types of nerve blocks for hip surgery pain relief in children
The Comparison of Pericapsular Nerve Block and Fascia Iliaca Compartment Block in Children With Cerebral Palsy or Spina Bifida for Pain Management in Hip Surgery.
This study is testing whether a new type of nerve block can help kids with conditions like cerebral palsy and spina bifida feel less pain after hip surgery compared to a standard nerve block.

What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to determine whether the Pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block provides better pain relief than the Fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) during hip reconstruction surgery in children with conditions like cerebral palsy and spina bifida. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the PENG block or the FICB, both using ultrasound guidance and 0.5% ropivacaine. Postoperative pain management will be standardized with intravenous acetaminophen and oral ibuprofen, and additional pain relief will be monitored and recorded. The study will assess pain scores and the effectiveness of the analgesia provided by each method.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include children aged 3 to 18 years with cerebral palsy or spina bifida who require reconstructive hip surgery.
Not a fit: Patients with contraindications to local anesthetics or invasive procedures, or those classified as ASA > 3, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved pain management strategies for children undergoing hip surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research in nerve blocks for pediatric pain management, this specific comparison of PENG and FICB is relatively novel.
