What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to determine whether benzylpenicillin is a more effective treatment than cloxacillin for patients with penicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia. Adult patients over 18 years old diagnosed with this condition will be randomly assigned to receive either benzylpenicillin or cloxacillin after their blood cultures confirm the presence of the bacteria. The study will monitor treatment outcomes, including adverse events and effectiveness, over a specified duration based on the type of infection. The trial is designed to provide insights into optimizing antibiotic therapy for this serious infection.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older with penicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia.

Not a fit: Patients with a penicillin allergy or those who are in terminal palliation may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved treatment options for patients suffering from Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections.

How similar studies have performed: While the comparison of these two antibiotics has not been extensively studied, previous research has indicated the importance of optimizing antibiotic therapy for Staphylococcus aureus infections.
