What this trial studies

This observational study enrolls adults with clinically diagnosed chronic periodontitis at Al-Hawash Private University in Homs. Participants will receive a standard periodontal exam (attachment loss, probing depth) and samples collected from subgingival pockets. Samples will be cultured, typically on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, to detect Candida albicans. The study will report the prevalence of Candida in this patient group and explore associations with periodontal measures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (18+) diagnosed with chronic periodontitis who consent to participate, have no systemic diseases affecting oral health, and have not used antibiotics or antifungals in the past three months.

Not a fit: People with systemic conditions that affect oral health (for example diabetes or immunosuppression), or those who recently took antibiotics/antifungals, are excluded and would not benefit from this study's findings for their care.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If Candida albicans is shown to be common or linked to worse periodontal findings, clinicians could consider antifungal-directed strategies or adjusted care to improve outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have detected Candida albicans in periodontal pockets and suggested it may worsen inflammation, but its precise role in periodontitis remains uncertain.
