What this trial studies
This is an observational, survey-based study of urban community members with chronic disease to measure openness to and barriers against adopting a vegetarian diet. Participants complete questionnaires about perceived stigma, tastiness, cost, convenience, familiarity, and healthfulness. Researchers will compare responses between Black and White participants to look for differences. Enrollment and data collection occur at University of Maryland Baltimore clinical sites with cross-sectional analysis of the survey results.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18–88 living in the Baltimore area who have one or more chronic diseases and can complete a survey, with recruitment focusing on Black and White participants.
Not a fit: People under 18 or over 88, those without chronic disease, or individuals unwilling to complete questionnaires are not eligible and unlikely to benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could inform targeted education and support to increase vegetarian diet uptake among urban patients with chronic disease.
How similar studies have performed: Survey-based research has previously identified common barriers to plant-based diets in other groups, but applying this approach to urban patients with chronic disease and comparing Black and White participants provides new, population-specific data.
