What this trial studies

This randomized controlled trial will enroll 60 adults undergoing total knee arthroplasty at Yalova Training and Research Hospital between July 2025 and July 2026 and randomly assign them to a Baduanjin-plus-standard-care group or a standard-care-only control group. The intervention group will begin guided Baduanjin exercises on the first postoperative day and continue daily for three weeks while the control group receives routine postoperative care. Outcomes—pain measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), comfort via the General Comfort Questionnaire, and the Quality of Recovery-40 (QoR-40)—will be collected weekly for three weeks. The study excludes patients over 70, those using anxiolytic or sedative drugs, patients with contraindications to Baduanjin, and those with significant mental illness.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18–70 who undergo total knee arthroplasty, are stable and conscious after surgery, can follow exercise instructions, and consent to participate.

Not a fit: Patients over 70, those taking anxiolytic or sedative medications, people with contraindications to Baduanjin or significant cognitive/mental illness, or those unable to perform the movements are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the intervention could reduce postoperative pain, improve patient comfort, and enhance overall recovery, potentially decreasing reliance on pain medications.

How similar studies have performed: Small prior studies of Baduanjin and other mind–body exercises have suggested benefits for pain, mood, and functional recovery, but high-quality evidence specific to postoperative knee replacement remains limited.
