Algorithm for selecting liver transplant candidates over 70 years old
Prospective Evaluation of a Selection Protocol for Patients Over 70 Years Old for Liver Transplantation
Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova · NCT06382740

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to develop a step-by-step algorithm for selecting liver transplant candidates aged over 70 years. It addresses the increasing volume of liver transplants in the elderly, who often face unique clinical challenges due to age-related comorbidities. The study will evaluate patients aged 70 to 75 with end-stage liver disease or liver tumors, focusing on establishing a rigorous selection process for transplantation. The goal is to improve outcomes for older patients undergoing liver transplantation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged between 70 and 75 years who require a liver transplant due to end-stage liver disease or liver tumors.
Not a fit: Patients younger than 70 years or those requiring a living donor liver transplant will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the selection process for liver transplantation in elderly patients, potentially leading to better outcomes and increased access to transplantation.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited established consensus on algorithms for elderly liver transplant candidates, the increasing focus on this demographic suggests potential for success in similar approaches.
