AI-generated interactive video instructions for mitral valve repair
Video-Based AI-Generated Peri-operative Instructions for Mitral Valve Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial on Health Outcomes and Patient Experience
This trial tests whether an AI-generated, interactive peri-operative video program can reduce unplanned hospital visits and readmissions for adults having elective, isolated mitral valve repair.

What this trial studies
This is a prospective, single-center, randomized trial at Cedars-Sinai comparing an AI-generated interactive peri-operative video education program to standard education in a 1:1 ratio for adults undergoing elective isolated mitral valve repair. Participants will watch the assigned videos and complete questionnaires, with outcomes tracked through hospital records and follow-up. The primary outcome is total unplanned healthcare utilization, a composite of readmissions, emergency department visits, and unplanned outpatient visits; secondary outcomes include length of stay and cardiovascular medication adherence, and tertiary outcomes include anxiety, satisfaction, and discharge location. All procedures and enrollment take place at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute in Los Angeles.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older scheduled for elective, isolated mitral valve repair at Cedars-Sinai who can read English or Spanish and can access and navigate a smartphone or computer are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients who need additional cardiac procedures at the time of repair, who cannot reliably access or use a smart device or the internet, or who do not read English or Spanish are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could lower unplanned readmissions and emergency visits and improve recovery by giving clearer, personalized peri-operative instructions.
How similar studies have performed: Prior video-based and digital education programs have shown modest gains in adherence and reduced readmissions, but AI-generated, interactive peri-operative videos are a relatively new and largely untested approach.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Adult patients ≥ 18 years planned for elective, isolated MV repair. 2. Provide Informed consent Exclusion Criteria: 1. Insufficient computer/smart device knowledge. Children or caregivers can assist, but patients should be able to access their own email or text messages and navigate to the internet to use the provided AI generated educational intervention. 2. Inconsistent access to a smart device with internet connection throughout the study period. 3. Inability to speak, read, and understand English or Spanish 4. Need for any concomitant procedure at the time of MV repair
