What this trial studies
This interventional study delivers a photo-realistic virtual community health educator (vCHE) that provides personalized, culturally and linguistically tailored information to users. The vCHE interfaces are available in English and Spanish and represent diverse genders and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Adult cancer patients and their care partners interact with the internet-based vCHE and complete questionnaires while the study tracks referrals to clinical programs and subsequent enrollment. Mayo Clinic in Florida leads the effort with support from the National Cancer Institute and excludes people who have participated in a cancer clinical trial within the past three years.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults (18+) who have ever been diagnosed with cancer or are actively involved as care partners for an adult cancer patient and can understand English or Spanish.
Not a fit: People who have participated in a cancer clinical trial within the last three years are excluded and would not receive benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the vCHE could increase and diversify referrals to cancer clinical programs while lowering the cost and logistical burden compared with in-person community health worker outreach.
How similar studies have performed: In-person community health educator programs have improved recruitment of underrepresented groups, but using photo-realistic virtual agents for this purpose is relatively novel and not widely tested.
