What this trial studies

VIPP-SD uses video-feedback coaching to help parents recognize and respond more sensitively to their 2–6-year-olds and to adopt non-coercive, developmentally appropriate discipline. Families are randomized to receive the VIPP-SD intervention or a control condition with a similar number of non-therapeutic contact visits, with outcomes measured 8 weeks and 6 months after the intervention. Primary outcomes are parental sensitivity and sensitive discipline; secondary outcomes include child behavioral problems, parental depression and anxiety, broader parenting practices, and economic advantages. Trained interveners deliver sessions in person at ISPA in Lisbon and standardized coding of parent–child interactions will be used for outcome measurement.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are Portuguese-speaking primary parents of typically developing children aged 2–6 years who can attend in-person sessions in Lisbon.

Not a fit: Children with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or hereditary diseases, families unable to attend in-person sessions, or non-Portuguese speakers were excluded and are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase parental sensitivity and reduce children's behavioral problems, improving children's socioemotional development and parental well-being.

How similar studies have performed: VIPP-SD is an established, evidence-based intervention with prior trials showing improved parental sensitivity and reductions in child behavior problems.
