Video program to improve understanding of diabetic eye disease
Addressing Low Patient Follow-up Rates Among Patients With Diabetes in the Eye Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center

What this trial studies
At Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital eye clinic, patients with diabetes will watch brief animated videos explaining diabetic retinopathy and macular edema in English or Spanish. The videos are designed to improve understanding of diagnoses and treatment options and will be shown around scheduled clinic visits. Knowledge concordance and patient satisfaction will be measured with digital Qualtrics surveys, and clinic follow-up rates will be tracked. Patients with severe vision impairment that prevents viewing the videos will be excluded.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: People with diabetes who have a scheduled diabetes- or diabetic retinopathy–related visit at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and who speak English or Spanish are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients who cannot see or understand the videos due to significant vision obstruction or who do not speak English or Spanish are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the videos could improve patient understanding of diabetic eye disease and increase follow-up attendance, which may help protect vision.
How similar studies have performed: Prior educational-video interventions in eye care and chronic disease settings have shown improved knowledge and sometimes better follow-up, though results are mixed and context-dependent.
