What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) in preserving arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing major lower limb orthopedic surgery. SGB is a procedure that increases blood flow and reduces vascular resistance, potentially preventing complications during surgery. The study aims to assess whether SGB can mitigate vascular reactivity and improve outcomes for hemodialysis patients during surgical procedures. Participants will be monitored for the preservation of their AVF post-surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are chronic renal failure patients aged 21 to 75 who are undergoing major lower limb orthopedic surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with psychiatric disorders, substance abuse history, or certain cardiovascular and respiratory conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance the preservation of arteriovenous fistulas, improving dialysis access and outcomes for patients.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of stellate ganglion block has shown promise in other contexts, this specific application in hemodialysis patients is novel and has not been extensively tested.
