What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to evaluate the safety and feasibility of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating low-risk thyroid cancers that are 2 cm or smaller. Participants will undergo pre-procedural scans and the RFA procedure, followed by three follow-up appointments at 4 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months to monitor their recovery and any potential complications. The study is conducted at the University Health Network in Toronto and seeks to determine if RFA can be a viable alternative to traditional surgery for these patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 to 100 with thyroid nodules ≤2 cm that are classified as Bethesda 5/6.
Not a fit: Patients under 18, pregnant women, those with invasive or metastatic thyroid cancer, or those previously treated for thyroid cancer may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a less invasive treatment option for patients with low-risk thyroid cancer, potentially preserving their quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results with radiofrequency ablation for similar conditions, indicating potential for success in this approach.
