Using PrEP, Doing It for Ourselves (UPDOs)
Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial of Using PrEP, Doing it for Ourselves [UPDOs] Protective Styles: A Multi-level Intervention to Improve HIV Testing and PrEP Uptake Among At-risk Populations Living in the Southeastern Region of the United States
NA · Duke University · NCT06638892
This project will test whether UPDOs, an online video and telehealth program paired with salon outreach, helps Black cisgender women in the southeastern US learn about and start using PrEP.

What this trial studies
The trial compares UPDOs — a 6-week web-based edutainment series, structured debrief blogs, stylist training to act as community opinion leaders, and telehealth access via Q Care Plus — to standard CDC HIV prevention materials. Researchers will recruit participants through 32 beauty salons in high HIV-rate areas of the US Southeast and enroll Black cisgender women aged 18 and older. Participants complete surveys at baseline and at 6, 12, 24, 32, and 52 weeks, with HIV testing and PrEP prescription access provided through the telehealth platform. The intervention was co-developed with a Community Advisory Council and informed by prior pilot work to reflect local lived experiences.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Black cisgender women aged 18 or older who live in the southeastern United States and can access participating beauty salons or telehealth services.
Not a fit: People under 18, those who do not identify as Black or as cisgender women, those outside the study region, or individuals already stably using PrEP may not benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase trust in PrEP, boost uptake and adherence among Black cisgender women, and help reduce HIV risk in high-need communities.
How similar studies have performed: Previous pilot work and other community-based or telehealth PrEP efforts have shown promise, but the UPDOs combination of stylist-led outreach and a scripted edutainment series is relatively novel.
