What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of laser photobiomodulation in preventing oral mucositis and functional impairments in adult patients with hematologic cancers undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Participants will receive daily laser treatment in their oral cavity from the first day of transplantation conditioning until three days post-transplant. The study will compare the outcomes of those receiving laser therapy to a control group receiving standard care. Primary outcomes include the incidence of oral mucositis, functional capacity, and patient acceptability of the treatment.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 to 65 with hematologic neoplasms who are scheduled for HSCT and can understand Spanish.

Not a fit: Patients with cognitive deficits, clinical instability, or pre-existing oral infections may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could significantly reduce the incidence of oral mucositis and improve recovery outcomes for patients undergoing HSCT.

How similar studies have performed: While few experimental trials have evaluated photobiomodulation for oral mucositis, this approach is relatively novel in the context of HSCT.
