What this trial studies

This observational pilot study evaluates the effectiveness of bedside Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS) as a non-invasive tool in the Treat-to-Target strategy for managing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), specifically Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The study will monitor patients over a 6-12 month period to assess transmural response and remission, while also predicting clinical and biochemical responses at 3 months and mucosal healing at 6-12 months. Participants will undergo IUS at multiple time points, alongside other clinical assessments, to determine the feasibility and impact of IUS in routine care for IBD management.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years with active Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis meeting specific endoscopic criteria.

Not a fit: Patients with Crohn's disease restricted to non-terminal ileum, isolated proctitis in ulcerative colitis, or those with a BMI over 30 may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved disease management and therapeutic outcomes for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of Intestinal Ultrasound is growing, this specific application within a Treat-to-Target strategy is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
