Using blood pressure and oxygen measurements to predict fall risk in older adults

The Value of Near-infrared Spectroscopy and Blood Pressure Measurements in Estimating Future Fall Risk in Older Adults

Observational Academisch Medisch Centrum - Universiteit van Amsterdam (AMC-UvA) · NCT06714565

This study is trying to see if measuring blood pressure and oxygen levels can help predict fall risks in older adults who have fallen in the past year.

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the relationship between continuous blood pressure measurements and cerebral oxygenation levels in older adults who have experienced falls. Participants aged 65 and older, who have had a fall in the past year, will undergo a series of hemodynamic measurements while performing a standing procedure. They will then track their falls and related healthcare use over the next 12 months to identify patterns that may indicate future fall risk.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are older adults aged 65 and above who have experienced a fall in the last year and can perform specific physical maneuvers.

Not a fit: Patients who are physically unable to perform the required maneuvers or have a life expectancy of less than one year may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved fall prevention strategies for older adults, potentially reducing fall-related injuries.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored fall risk factors, this specific combination of continuous blood pressure and cerebral oxygenation measurements is relatively novel.
