What this trial studies

This single-site, two-arm randomized trial enrolls adult patients at an orthopedic clinic and randomizes them to hear either a brief mindfulness audio or an injury-management (pain psychoeducation) control while in the waiting room. The primary comparison is immediate self-reported pain after the brief intervention. Eligible participants are English-speaking adults (18+) receiving care at Tallahassee Orthopedic Center who can consent. Those unable to provide informed consent because of physical or mental incapacity are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older who receive care at Tallahassee Orthopedic Center, speak English, and can give informed consent are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People under 18, non–English speakers, or those unable to consent or engage with audio materials are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the intervention could offer a low-cost, easy-to-deliver way to reduce short-term pain for clinic patients.

How similar studies have performed: Brief mindfulness exercises have shown modest short-term pain reductions in prior research, but combining them with a patient testimonial is a relatively novel approach.
