What this trial studies

This pilot study investigates the feasibility and effects of a Modified Ketogenic Diet (MKD) on psychotic symptoms in hospitalized patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders. The study will randomly assign participants to either a ketogenic diet group, where carbohydrate intake is limited to 15-20 g/day, or a control group receiving standard hospital meals. Over six weeks, researchers will assess changes in psychotic symptoms, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and overall functioning using structured clinical interviews and symptom scales. Blood glucose, lipid levels, and ketone bodies will also be monitored to evaluate metabolic changes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older with diagnosed psychotic disorders exhibiting psychotic symptoms.

Not a fit: Patients with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, severe eating disorders, or acute medical issues, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a novel dietary intervention for managing psychotic symptoms in patients.

How similar studies have performed: While ketogenic diets have been established for epilepsy treatment, this specific application for psychotic disorders is novel and lacks extensive prior research.
