Understanding the role of glycocalyx integrity in preventing major cardiovascular events
Impaired Endothelial Glycocalyx Predicts Adverse Outcome in Subjects Without Overt Cardiovascular Disease: a 6 Year Follow up Study
This study is looking to see if the health of a protective layer in blood vessels can help prevent serious heart problems in people getting routine check-ups.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to recruit individuals referred for routine screening at the primary prevention outpatient clinic of Attikon University Hospital in Athens. Participants will undergo a detailed medical history assessment, clinical examination, and fasting blood tests to identify risk factors such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia. The integrity of the endothelial glycocalyx will be examined, and subjects will be followed for six years to monitor adverse cardiovascular events. The study will also evaluate the predictive value of pulse wave velocity and other parameters for cardiovascular risk.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals referred for routine cardiovascular risk screening without a history of significant cardiovascular disease.
Not a fit: Patients with existing coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, heart failure, or other serious health conditions may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of cardiovascular risk factors and improve prevention strategies for major cardiovascular events.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific focus on glycocalyx integrity is novel, similar studies have shown promise in understanding cardiovascular risk factors.
