Understanding muscle loss in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
Prevalence and Impact of Sarcopenia in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the Significance of Removing the Colon
This study looks at how muscle loss affects people with severe flare-ups of inflammatory bowel disease, comparing those who get medical treatment to those who have surgery, to see how their muscle health changes over a year.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the prevalence of sarcopenia, a condition characterized by muscle loss, in patients suffering from severe flare-ups of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Participants will be divided into two cohorts: one receiving medical treatment and the other undergoing colectomy. Evaluations will include examinations, laboratory tests, and surveys conducted at the onset of the flare-up and again one year later to assess changes in nutritional status and microbiota composition. The study seeks to understand the impact of these conditions on muscle health and overall prognosis.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult patients experiencing an acute flare-up of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease admitted to hospitals in the Region Västra Götaland and Stockholm.
Not a fit: Patients who are not experiencing a flare-up or those who do not wish to participate in the study will not benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management strategies for patients with inflammatory bowel disease, potentially enhancing their nutritional status and overall health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific focus on sarcopenia in inflammatory bowel disease may be novel, related studies have shown that addressing muscle loss in chronic conditions can lead to improved patient outcomes.
