Understanding metabolic responses after bariatric surgery

Genetic and Biochemical Characteristics of Medically-Complicated Obesity and Response to Bariatric Surgery

Observational University of California, Davis · NCT02024542

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the genetic and biomechanical markers of adipose tissue in patients with morbid obesity undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Participants will be invited after completing a thorough pre-surgical evaluation at UC Davis Health System, including lab studies and educational programs. Blood, urine, and fecal samples will be collected pre-operatively, along with tissue samples during surgery. Post-operative observations will track weight loss and the resolution of co-morbidities, with additional lab studies conducted at designated times.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-55 who meet NIH criteria for bariatric surgery and have controlled dyslipidemia along with impaired glucose metabolism or type 2 diabetes.

Not a fit: Patients with uncontrolled metabolic syndrome, including uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of metabolic changes after bariatric surgery, potentially leading to improved treatment strategies for obesity and related conditions.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in understanding metabolic responses to bariatric surgery, making this approach both relevant and promising.
