Understanding factors related to weaning failure in critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation
Ventilatory Settings and Monitoring Variables Associated With Weaning Failure in Critically Ill Patients: A Retrospective Study

What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the ventilatory settings and monitoring variables that are associated with weaning failure in critically ill patients who have been on mechanical ventilation. It focuses on patients who have undergone at least one extubation and one spontaneous breathing trial during their ICU stay. The study aims to identify the rates of weaning failure, particularly in the context of COVID-19, and to analyze the factors contributing to both successful and unsuccessful weaning attempts. By collecting and analyzing data from patients in the ICU, the study seeks to improve understanding of the weaning process and its challenges.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are critically ill patients over 18 years old who have been on mechanical ventilation for at least 48 hours and have undergone extubation and spontaneous breathing trials.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have adequate or continuous monitoring during the weaning process or have inconsistent mechanical ventilation records may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved strategies for weaning patients off mechanical ventilation, enhancing recovery outcomes in critically ill patients.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have indicated varying success rates in weaning from mechanical ventilation, suggesting that while this approach is not entirely novel, it addresses a significant clinical challenge.
