Understanding factors influencing childhood obesity and diabetes in families
Genetic and Environmental Influences on Development of Type 2 Diabetes in Childhood: The Next Generation Longitudinal Birth Cohort.
This study looks at how parents' health and lifestyle choices affect the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in their children, while also trying to find ways to prevent these conditions through community support.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the roles of maternal and paternal factors, intrauterine exposures, genetic influences, and postnatal environments on the development of obesity and youth-onset type 2 diabetes in children. By clinically and metabolically profiling parents and their offspring, the study seeks to identify risk factors associated with these conditions. It will also evaluate the impact of maternal diabetes on the risk of obesity and diabetes in children and explore modifiable risk factors. Additionally, the study plans to develop a community-based breastfeeding intervention to prevent diabetes in at-risk offspring.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include pregnant women with type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, or no diabetes who identify as Indigenous and reside in Manitoba.
Not a fit: Patients with type 1 diabetes or those residing outside of Manitoba may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to targeted interventions that reduce the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in children from high-risk families.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in identifying risk factors for obesity and diabetes in children, making this approach promising but not entirely novel.
