Tracking respiratory viruses in healthcare and animal workers

Surveillance of Respiratory Viruses in Healthcare and Animal Workers in the Netherlands

What this trial studies

This prospective surveillance project will follow healthcare and animal workers over time, collecting respiratory samples and blood to detect viruses and measure local and systemic immune responses. Both symptomatic and asymptomatic participants will be sampled at multiple timepoints to detect early circulation of novel viruses, immune escape, or changes after vaccination. The study combines direct viral detection with serologic and immune profiling to inform infectivity and protective responses during outbreaks. Recruitment is centered at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam and targets adults working in healthcare or with animals.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults (18+) who work in healthcare or with animals and can come to Erasmus MC for regular sample collection.

Not a fit: People under 18, those not working in healthcare or with animals, or those unable to attend repeated sampling visits are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could provide earlier warning of novel or spreading respiratory viruses and better data on immunity to guide outbreak responses and vaccination strategies.

How similar studies have performed: Previous sentinel surveillance in healthcare workers during COVID-19 successfully detected infections early, so this approach builds on proven methods while extending monitoring to animal workers.
