What this trial studies

This study monitors the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in patients suffering from cirrhosis who develop bacterial infections. Given that cirrhosis patients are at a heightened risk for serious infections, the study aims to gather data on the types of bacteria causing these infections and their resistance patterns. The findings will help inform empirical antibiotic treatment guidelines specifically tailored for the Latin American region, where current guidelines are lacking. By understanding the local epidemiology of infections, the study seeks to improve patient outcomes through timely and appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients diagnosed with cirrhosis who have episodes of culture-confirmed bacterial infections.

Not a fit: Patients who have undergone solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved treatment protocols for cirrhosis patients facing bacterial infections, potentially reducing mortality rates.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have been conducted in other regions, this approach is novel for Latin America, where specific guidelines for antibiotic treatment in cirrhosis patients are currently absent.
