Total intravenous (TIVA) versus sevoflurane inhaled anesthesia during colorectal cancer surgery: effects on muscle mass

Total Intravenous Anesthesia Versus Balanced Anesthesia on Loss of Muscle Mass After Colorectal Cancer Surgery

Not applicable Interventional Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy · NCT07237438

What this trial studies

Adults scheduled for open colorectal cancer surgery at the Regional Institute of Oncology in Iași will receive either TIVA or sevoflurane anesthesia during their operation. Muscle mass and function will be measured before and after surgery using ultrasound, handgrip dynamometry, and bioimpedance to track perioperative changes. Investigators will compare the two anesthesia approaches and analyze patient-level risk factors for skeletal muscle loss. The trial excludes patients with neuromuscular disease, limb amputation, paraplegia, or terminal cancer and is conducted at a single center in Romania.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adult patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and scheduled for open colorectal surgery at the Regional Institute of Oncology, Iași, who can provide consent and do not have major neuromuscular disease or limb amputation are the intended participants.

Not a fit: Patients with terminal cancer, pre-existing neuromuscular disorders, limb amputation, paraplegia, or those unable to consent are excluded and therefore would not receive direct benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could guide anesthesia choice to reduce perioperative muscle loss and improve postoperative recovery for colorectal cancer patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has linked anesthesia technique to some postoperative outcomes, but direct comparisons of TIVA versus sevoflurane for preserving perioperative muscle mass are limited.
