What this trial studies

This study evaluates a phone-based tobacco cessation intervention specifically designed for people living with HIV in Uganda and Zambia. It compares the effectiveness of this intervention against standard care, which includes brief advice to quit and nicotine replacement therapy. The research aims to assess the efficacy, feasibility, and affordability of delivering these interventions through healthcare professionals at HIV treatment centers. By utilizing a previously tested SMS platform, the study seeks to address the unique challenges faced by HIV-positive tobacco users in low-income settings.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults living with HIV who are current daily tobacco users.

Not a fit: Patients who are under 18, pregnant, or not receiving continuous care at the study site will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly reduce tobacco use among people living with HIV, improving their overall health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically targeting tobacco cessation in HIV-positive populations in low-income countries, similar interventions have shown promise in other contexts.
