Testing for viruses after a monkey bite

Virus Transmission to People Recently Bitten or With a History of Monkey Bites "SIMVIR"

Not applicable Interventional Institut Pasteur · NCT07097480

We will test adults who were recently bitten by a monkey or who have a history of monkey bites to see if they carry simian viruses such as STLV-1 or SFV using blood and saliva samples.

What this trial studies

This interventional study enrolls adults (≥18) who sustained WHO category 3 bites from nonhuman primates, including both recent and past exposures. Participants provide blood and saliva samples, with an optional genetic analysis component for those who consent. Samples will be tested for simian viruses (STLV-1 and SFV) to estimate prevalence and characterize possible transmission after bites. Enrollment and sample processing are conducted at the Institut Pasteur Medical Center in Paris.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (age ≥18) who experienced a WHO category 3 bite from a nonhuman primate, can give written informed consent, and are affiliated with a French social security scheme are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People who only had scratches from nonhuman primates, minors, those under legal protection, or those whose medical care prevents sample collection are unlikely to benefit from joining.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the study could help identify people who carry simian viruses after monkey bites and improve post-bite monitoring and prevention recommendations.

How similar studies have performed: Field and occupational studies have documented human SFV infections and occasional STLV-1 related findings after primate exposure, but systematic post-bite prevalence studies are limited.
