What this trial studies

This observational study aims to survey members of the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) who identify as minorities to explore systemic barriers that may hinder their advancement into leadership roles. The study will utilize a survey distributed via SurveyMonkey, with an option for participants to engage in follow-up interviews through phone or Zoom. The investigators hypothesize that structural issues, such as the absence of formal mentoring programs, contribute to the underrepresentation of minorities in leadership positions within the ASA. The survey results will help identify trends and barriers faced by these individuals in their professional journeys.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are members of the ASA, including medical students, residents, and attending anesthesiologists who self-identify as minorities.

Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as minorities or are not members of the ASA may not receive any benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to the development of targeted interventions to improve minority representation in leadership roles within anesthesiology.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies addressing minority representation in various medical fields, this specific approach focusing on anesthesiology and systemic barriers is relatively novel.
