What this trial studies
This research initiative, led by the University of Chicago in collaboration with various organizations, aims to connect individuals with a history of opioid use disorder, who are released from jails and prisons in Illinois, to effective substance use treatment. The study employs a randomized control trial design to evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive case management model and peer recovery coaching in improving treatment engagement and retention. It will also assess secondary outcomes such as insurance enrollment and re-arrest rates, while focusing on the differences in treatment engagement across urban and rural settings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 18 and older with a history of opioid use disorder who are being released from designated jails or prisons in Illinois.
Not a fit: Patients who are experiencing cognitive impairments that prevent informed consent or those residing outside the service area may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this initiative could significantly reduce opioid-related mortality and improve treatment outcomes for individuals with opioid use disorder.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with similar approaches in linking individuals with opioid use disorder to treatment, indicating that this methodology is promising.
